Hair that is full of natural volume and bounce is the result most of us aspire to when we want to look our best. However, if your hair is on the thin side or you have been struggling with hair loss, you may find this look difficult to achieve. Here are some well known tips and tricks you can try that may help to give limp locks a bit of extra oomph.
Start with a good haircut
Long hair that is cut to the same length can look flat and weighed down, particularly if you have fine hair without any natural wave. Ask your hairdresser to cut in some layers or feathering around your face to create some extra thickness and movement.
Use the right products
Avoid using heavy conditioners and styling treatments on your hair that will cause it to look dull and flat. Instead, look for a volumising shampoo that will help to plump your hair at the roots, and a lightweight conditioner that you can apply to the ends of your hair only.
After washing your hair, work a volumising mousse through it from root to tip. This will give some extra body and help to tame any frizz. Avoid using heavier serums, creams, and gels.
Dry to uplift the roots
If you are letting your hair dry naturally, flip your head upside down and use your fingers to tease out the roots. If you are using a hair dryer, spritz your hair through with a heat protection spray first. Then flip your hair over and dry upwards from the roots until it is semi dry.
Resume an upright head position to blow dry the rest of your hair in sections, using a round brush to lift from the root as you go along. If you want to add some extra lift, then you could even set your hair in velcro rollers for an hour or so.
After your hair is dry, you could add a little hairspray or texturising spray to help the volume last, but be careful not to overdo it.
Try changing your parting
If you usually have a centre parting, simply flipping your parting onto the opposite side can give the impression of fuller hair.
Backcomb to create extra height
There are various backcombing techniques that can be used to create some extra height around the crown, which can be effective if you want to create a stylish ponytail or updo.
Use a bristle brush to hold up sections of the hair vertically, and push down from behind. Avoid doing this every day as you might damage your hair, but for a special occasion when you want your features to look nicely framed in a photograph it works rather well.
Investigate salon volumising hair treatments
Hair and beauty salons often offer special treatments for women who have thinning hair, such as a mesh that is fitted over the scalp to add extra hair.
