As the world continues to battle against the coronavirus, the UK national lockdown has been extended until at least March, which means we are all having to make do without having access to our favourite salons for even longer than planned.
While some people may take the plunge in cutting and styling their own hair during the lockdown, many women have decided to use the time to let their hair recover from constant treatments, dyes, and intensive styling, embrace their natural texture and even
embrace their natural hair colour.
Whatever you lockdown hair care regime, we have some tips to keep your hair healthy.
1. How Often You Wash Your Hair Depends on Hair Type
Daily washing can dry out the hair but there are less stringent shampoos that can moisturise more than others, which is a good middle-ground for shampooing daily without drying it out too much.
Some people with really thin hair still like the feeling of clean, dry hair as it can make the hair seem fuller with more texture. Those with thick hair don’t need to wash as often because the hair absorbs more of the natural oils the scalp generates.
2. Minimise Heat Styling If Possible
Heat styling your hair should be saved for special occasions. Finer hair can be air dried, and thicker hair can be heat dried, but then should be left for a week before washing again. Keeping heat styling to a minimum will protect your hair and cuticles.
Understanding your hair, and how to get the most from its natural texture, will allow you to rely more on products and less on heat styling. Products will help protect your hair as well as enhance a shape or texture.
3. Health Hair Growth Requires a Good Diet
As the saying goes, you are what you eat, and your diet can have a huge impact on your hair health. Sugar, for instance, will cause your body to produce increased levels of the hair-loss hormone DHT.
Eat whole foods that are rich in nutrients like protein, Vitamin C, and omega 3 fatty acids. Iron, B12, folate, biotin, and zinc are also of benefit to the hair. Low Iron, B12, and Folate levels can cause anaemia which reduces blood flow to the hair.
