Should You Change Your Make-Up As You Age?
When we look in the mirror, most of us don’t see a true reflection of ourselves staring back at us. More often than not, we see the version of ourselves in our 20s experimenting with new looks, ourselves in our 30s becoming more confident in our own skin, or ourselves in our 40s when we have finally worked out what looks good and what doesn’t.
But what happens after the greys come in thick and fast, and there are more wrinkles than not? Is that the time we need to give our make-up bag an overhaul and reinvent our style routine?
Perhaps the first, and most important, thing that will need to change as you age is the foundation you use. Marie Claire recognises the importance of getting foundation right as you get older, saying: “You want a complexion product that plumps and hydrates, won’t settle into fine lines or wrinkles, and gives a youthful glow.”
Wearing something too heavy on your skin will age you even more, so it is best to go for something light, such as a CC cream or tinted moisturiser.
When it comes to eye make-up, those who have been rocking the smoky look for the last few decades might not what to do once they hit their 60s and 70s.
Firstly, it is important to prime the eyelids, as this prevents eye shadow from creasing or smearing, which is a big problem with mature skin. Those with warm lids will be prone to running make-up, while ladies with dry lids will find shadow doesn’t blend and eyeliner is hard to apply, according to AARP.
Eyeliner is great at giving definition to the eye, so don’t be afraid of it, as long as you make sure you pull the eye taught enough to get a sleek line. Then go over the line with a similar-coloured eye shadow for a dramatic look.
Neutral eye shadows are the best, using a light shade on the lids and a medium one on the crease. Finally, use a lash curler to open the eyes and finish with black mascara.
