The sunshine is finally here, and while it is time to enjoy a dip in the pool and sunbathing in the garden, it is also important not to forget about your hair.
With highs of more than 30C hitting the UK this week, this can spell bad news for your tresses, if it is not well looked after.
Moisturise
For a start, it is essential to moisturise our locks and use a deep-conditioning treatment every so often. The summer heat, together with frequent washing, salt water and heated appliances can really dry out hair, so make sure you swap to a moisturising shampoo and conditioner to keep your hair shiny.
Wash before seaside fun
If you’re hitting the beach this summer, Elle recommends washing your mane in cold water before going in the sea or swimming pool.
“Your hair can only absorb so much water so by washing it with fresh water first you’re limiting the amount of damaging chlorine it can absorb,” it advised.
Wear a hat
Just as we protect our eyes from the sunlight and our skin from harsh UV rays, it is important to shield our hair too.
That is why it is important to wear a hat or scarf when in the sunshine, with Treehugger saying: “Not only does this provide extra UV protection, but it also helps your scalp to retain moisture. A hat reduces damage caused by wind, especially if your hair is prone to tangling, and protects colour-treated hair.”
Ditch the appliances
Don’t worry about straightening your tresses or using a curling wand while the weather is warm, and it could even be a good idea to let your locks dry naturally. The less heat it is exposed to, the less damaged it will become.
