The world of makeup is filled with a wide range of styles, looks and products that can sometimes make it difficult to know where to start.
However, one of the core aspects of a self makeup course is to understand that
all makeup styles
are built from the bare essentials, and if you understand the foundations, you can build up to some truly phenomenal looks.
Here are some of the most essential parts of most makeup kits and how to use them.
Foundation
The first step of any project is the foundation, and this is true of makeup foundation as well. Foundations help to even out your skin tone and remove the appearance of slight blemishes on your face.
This can be as simple as a tinted moisturiser, which adds both hydration and a hint of colour, or can be a more conventional liquid foundation. You apply it with either a flat brush, a small sponge blender or even your finders.
Concealers are more effective, targeted coverage used to cover more prominent blemishes.
Bronzer/Highlighter
If foundation is a way to add light to your skin, bronzer is a slight tan that adds shadows to your face that can be taken away by foundation, whilst highlighters do the opposite and add extra brightness.
Blush
Your natural skin has a little flush of colour on your cheeks, but much like with shadows and highlights, this can be removed by foundations.
A blush, usually applied as a powder by beginners but also available as a cream, adds a flush of colour to your cheeks, which can be similar to your natural look but can also be a more experimental and vibrant colour.
Eyeshadow
Often taking the form of a powder, eyeshadow is a subtle addition of colour applied to the eyelids that help to frame your eyes and can create some truly staggering looks depending on the shade you use.
Eyeliner
A pencil is used to enhance the definition of your eye shape, which can be used to create several dynamic and prominent effects.
You can even take this further with a brow pencil to fill in and add definition to your eyebrows.
Mascara
Mascara is often the first place people start with makeup, as application is as simple as brushing it onto your eyelashes.
Lip Colour
There are far too many types of lip colour to mention here, from balms, tints, stains, crème sticks and glosses, and the key when starting out is to choose a less pigmented, more subtle option and build your way up to stronger looks.
Much like with eye makeup, lip liner can help create a more defined look and stop colour bleed.
