There's no time like summer to rethink your makeup routine, when you want to achieve that healthy outdoor glow to get you in the mood for a holiday or a special event. As the weather is proving somewhat unreliable, there’s plenty you can do to create a beautiful summer look with a few key makeup trends this year. Here’s a quick round up.
The latte makeup trend
Like so many trends in recent years, the latte trend has been fuelled by Tik Tok. As the name suggests, it’s all about achieving soft hues of warm neutrals and browns with a smooth rich texture. The exact shades you use will depend on the natural skin tone you already have; pick a warm colour that is one or two shades darker than your natural colouring.
Avoid using pink or yellow based blushers and foundation, but stick to shades of light caramel or bronze that give you a warm glowy complexion. Complement the look with neutral brown eye makeup, swapping out black mascara and eyeliner for bronze or dark brown. Add just a tint of warm neutral gloss to your lips to finish off the look.
Mermaidcore
Mermaidcore is a whole style subculture that is making a splash in the mainstream waters this summer. It’s inspired by the original sirens of the sea, with shades of aquamarine and shimmery finishes. There’s no need to invest in a lot of new products; simply playing around with what you already have should enable you to achieve this look pretty easily.
Pick eyeshadows in shades of blue or green with a slightly iridescent texture, and combine it with soft pastel tones on your lips and cheeks. Complement the look with crochet tops, jewellery pieces with pearlescent textures, and hair set in loose tumbling waves.
Barbiecore
The Barbiecore trend has been bubbling away for a couple of years now, but with the movie finally hitting the screens in the UK this summer, expect this look to peak over the next couple of months. The juggernaut marketing campaign has been hard to ignore, with adorable stills of Margot Robbie in fluffy pink and glittery make up.
If you like your make up a little on the OTT side, then this is definitely the trend for you! Combine shimmering pink eyeshadow with long curled black eyelashes and defined lash lines. Finish the look with hot pink lips and nails. It’s a fantastic excuse to abandon all restraint and unapologetically celebrate your femininity.
Retro 90s makeup
The 1990s are having a bit of a revival this summer, with Britpop bands Pulp and Blur making successful comeback tours, and grunge and cult TV shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer gaining a following among the younger generations. It was inevitable that some of the make up styles from this era would soon begin to re-emerge.
To go all-out retro, go for a skinny eyebrow (or as near as you dare), and work a frosted lip with a stronger outline colour. Finish off with plenty of black eyeliner.
