The way we wear our hair is a key part of our identity. However, it is not always easy to decide which hairstyle might suit us best. It can be tempting to copy a hairdo that looks amazing on your favourite celebrity, but it might not be quite right for you. Here are some points to bear in mind before your trip to the hairdresser.
What is your hair type?
To some extent, your natural hair type can be overcome with all the brilliant variety of styling tools and techniques that we have at our disposal today. However, it can be much easier to work with your natural hair type to save a lot of time and heat damage on a daily basis.
What is your face shape?
The shape of your face is a key factor in determining which hairstyles might suit you best. A simple way to check this is to tie your hair back and take a selfie. Then use a photo editing tool to trace around your face to define the shape. If it’s roughly the same width and length, then you probably have a round or square shaped face.
If your face is tapered from a wider forehead to a narrower chin, then you are likely to have a heart shaped face. If your face is longer in length than width and has an equally balanced forehead and chin, then you have an oval or rectangular face shape.
Square faces tend to have a strong jawline and broad forehead, so a centre parted style can offset these to give a flattering appearance. If you want a shorter cut, consider having some layers to help soften up the effect.
Round faces are well suited to layered or choppy styles that can help add some shape, such as a pixie crop or a long fringe with layers. Meanwhile, heart shaped faces can be balanced out with bob cuts or shoulder length hair.
Oval faces are able to carry off a number of different hairstyles. If you have longer hair, the butterfly cut with long layers that frame the face can work very well. However, unless your hair is naturally thick and straight, it does take quite a lot of work to get this style looking its best.
Hair that is naturally wavy or curly can help to soften up strong features, so if you have this type of hair work with it rather than opt to straighten it out. If you have naturally straight hair and a rectangular shaped face, avoid wearing it too long and unlayered as this can elongate the face further.
What is your style and personality?
Consider too whether a particular style works with who you are. For example, if you enjoy being the centre of attention then you may well disregard all of these suggestions and go for a really daring look. If you are someone who enjoys following fashion trends, then a versatile cut that will allow you to change your look regularly will work for you.
If your style is generally low-key, you may go for a flattering but low maintenance look.
